If you want to make a ruler, it is easier to divide in two--- bisecting a line. That is why we have rulers with inches, half inches, quarter inches and so on. It is more difficult to divide a given distance, say a centimeter, into ten equal parts and call them millimeters.

Hey --don't knock it! This God equation is just what I need to show my
'FPS-centric' students that it's really the metric system that is God's
system of measurement, since He obviously had a hand getting the meter
used as our unit of measurement for this equation to work out. I may
need to rewrite my lesson plans tonight... (I'll bet we could get
somebody to work up how the fps system that the devious Brits stuck us
with really works up to 666.)

--Merv
p.s. In all seriousness, the history of the meter is a fascinating one
---complete with surveyors who actually did map out & measure at least
part of the way to the north pole on a longitudinal line through
France. Of course they gave up before they got close to the pole and
used mathematics to finish out the "measurement". Thanks to this
inexact but pain-staking effort we now have an easy approximation for
our earth circumference even if a meter is now defined differently.
(same with 1 ml of water being about 1 gram) Try doing THAT with
gallons and cubic inches. God bless the French.
