Exactly. The commandment covers shins as well as cheeks and no amount of moral sophistry will allow one to evade the fact.

And the correct response is to love and pray for one's enemy - "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you" (Matthew 5:44)
