There is a lot to say about Job, but one that hasn't been discussed a lot
came to mind with your reference to "nature red in tooth and claw". In Job,
God basically says, "Yes, that's the way it is. Deal with it, and don't
counsel me on why I made it that way."

Job 38:39-40 God provides the lions and ravens with prey, and sometimes they
go hungry
Job 39:13-17 God deprived the ostrich of wisdom, so that she is hardened
against her young ones and leaves her eggs in the dirt, so that her own foot
may accidentally crush them or they may be devoured by wild beasts
Job 39:27-30 there is going to be animal death, and when there is, the eagle
(or vulture) will be there to suck up the blood

I don't think there is any reason to find those elements of the book of Job
disturbing at all. Granted I wouldn't be excited about going through it but
at least intellectually I can understand and accept the rationalization for
it. This is why I say it all comes down to theodicy. If we can accept Job
then TE and common descent and a red in tooth and claw nature and a little
survival of the fittest is no problem.
