I would second Michael Robert's excellent advice and add that a good Study Bible is a nice compromise between straight text (which, after all, is only God talking to you :-)) and commentaries. My personal favorite is the Life Application Study Bible, which comes in KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV and NLT, all with the same notes and study aids. The notes are a combination of expository and devotional / application helps.
