Jim,

Check out the book by Lynn Margulis "Acquiring Genomes". Lynn thinks
that this may actually be one of the major sources of evolutionary
novelty. I've argued for a long time that this particular
evolutionary mechanism is a disaster for Mike Behe's arguments.
