Overheard conversation between two students coming out of a debate between a
Christian & an atheist at a major university some years ago (in which the
Christian apparently came off as the clear "winner"): "Well -- even if he is
right, I still hate his guts."

Along with the clear importance of truth, the aspect of relationship is not to
be forgotten. I too think high profile public debates are often just a
pastime at best.
