Actually you have more than that. It is a dynamic system
and in fact, it is not a closed system either.

Still, that addition doesn't change the fact that a lot of it
probably could be modeled. But the most visible changes
seem to be primarily the result of external events (the
collision of an asteroid for example). At most times,
mutations would be largely neutral and produce only
marginal change over time. So crucial in
such a model is that the such catastrophic events occur
infrequently and do not perturb the system too drastically.
