Greetings:

Are any of you familiar with the "research" that supports this kind of
thinking?

William Hamilton's concept of inclusive fitness is the basis for these types
of conclusions regarding group loyalties. David Buss has just introduced a
handbook of evolutionary psychology. J.P. Rushton (the article in your post) does
comparative studies of IQ across racial groups. Though there are sigificant
differences Rushton is often branded as a racist for pursuing this line of
inquiry. You can also see D.S.Wilson's Darwin's Cathedral (evolutionary biology) or
Kevin MacDonald'd trilogy on Judaism (evolutionary psychology).
