A report in the Bern, Switzerland, daily newspaper "Der Bund" of 30
April 2004 (my translation):

........................................
*Darwin stays*

*Italy* Following massive protests, Charles Darwin's theory of
evolution is not being banished from the schools, after all. This is
what Letizia Moratti, Minister of Education, declares. Previously, she
had wanted to eliminate Darwin's theories. In the controversy over the
schools teaching Darwin's theory, according to which animals and humans
originated through slow evolution, rather than through divine creation,
30,000 professors, researchers, and intellectuals had protested against
the Minister. (sda)
