I asked Rich: "I am curious however -- what "Biblical moral law" are you
referring to in the above?"
Rich replied: "traditional moral law - without homosexuality for
The one place Dr. Spong and I agree upon (there may be others) is on the
topic of homosexuality. We agree that it is not mentioned in scripture. We
agree that the OT references to male homosexual activity are about as
binding today as similar OT admonitions against eating pork -- or the
admonition against embracing your wife for the first two weeks after
childbirth. We also agree, as do others on this list, that the Sodom story
is quite irrelevant to the issue.
We also agree that scripture does speak against sexual perversity. But
neither of us see any scriptural admonition against same gender long term
domestic relationships, either male or female. It is true that some, using
careless exegesis, have derived a "moral law" out of Paul's comments in
Romans 1 in which he chastizes "godless people." I suspect that is what you
I know quite well, and count as friends, three homosexual couples, two
female, one male, and know casually a number of others. None of these
persons fit the description of Paul's comments in Romans 1. One is now a
full time pastor; two of the others are ministerial students.
For many years Christians, good people, demonized others who were born with
a different skin color, and did so on the grounds of their biblical
exegesis. Thankfully, few do that anymore. But still today, good Christian
people demonize others on the grounds of their inborn sexual orientation,
orientations they did not choose.
It will take a few more years, but this, too, will pass.
