Earlier I said I didn't believe the Lord made a nature that is deceptive.
Rather than say that nature can be deceptive, I ought to have said that we
can deceive ourselves when interpreting nature. The phlogiston theory of
heat comes to mind. Someone observed that objects expand when heated, and
concluded that heat was a susbstance that flowed from the heat source into
the object, thereby making the object hot and making it expand. It was an
explanation that seemed plausible based on some observation, but turned out
to be incorrect.
