This is most interesting! Presumably, the hot basalt must have covered
the (still-growing) trees. I wonder how a leaf could leave an imprint on
liquid basalt. Recent basalt flows in Hawaii should be able to tell us
if this can indeed happen. Remember, we're talking here not of volcanic
ash (like Pompeii) but basalt lava flow.
Any ideas, anyone?
