WASHINGTON 90, UTAH 86
SALT LAKE CITY -- Chris Webber collected 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards to their first win in Salt Lake City in a decade, a 90-86 victory over the Utah Jazz. Juwan Howard added 19 points and 10 rebounds and Rod Strickland chipped in with 17 points for the Wizards, who had lost 10 straight games in Utah since a victory on Feb. 20, 1987. The victory was just the third for Washington in the last 21 meetings with Utah.
Karl Malone registered 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost only four home games all last season, including the playoffs.
Washington trailed by 10 points early in the second quarter before Webber and Howard fueled a 19-6 burst. Webber had all nine of his second-quarter points in the run and Howard added six as the Wizards claimed a 44-41 lead with 1:03 left in the half.
"It really took a lot of toughness to come back from the loss to Miami (Saturday)," Howard said. "Letting the game slip away, it was a heartbreaker, but tonight we maintained our composure and came out and rebounded well and from that frustrating evening we came and got the job done here."
The Wizards built their biggest lead at 67-58 on two free throws by Chris Whitney with 10:24 left in the fourth quarter. But Utah fought back behind six points from Shandon Anderson, and tied the game, 78-78, on a pair of free throws by Malone with 3:22 to go.
Calbert Cheaney answered with a jumper 17 seconds later to give the Wizards the lead for good. The Jazz were still within three points with less than 10 seconds left, but Terry Davis made one free throw and, after Utah's Jeff Hornacek missed a 3-pointer, Cheaney made two more free throws with 4.3 seconds left for an 89-83 advantage.
"We were able to come back and tie it up and then they hit some shots and we didn't," Hornacek said. "At the end they had Rod Strickland penetrating and we had to come over and help out and made him pass it off and Calbert Cheaney hit a couple of big baskets. But they just executed better than we did at the end."
Cheaney finished with 14 points for the Wizards, who shot 40 percent from the field. Hornacek had 16 points and Greg Ostertag had nine rebounds for the Jazz, who shot 43 percent.
